Pocket World In Figures 2008
Economist
I really like the idea of having all the key world facts, country by country, at my fingertips.
Unfortunately, I was paging through the 2008 edition and one of the first figures I noticed was the population of the Philippines: 83.1mn. I happen to know that the population was 91mn at the time of publication. That is an unacceptably large error for a key figure like population that gets applied to all per capita figures.
Disturbingly, this is the sort of error that could be caught by quickly checking the figures of the book against, say, CIA Factbook or U.N. statistics. That this was apparently not done is disturbing to the extent that I feel like I cannot rely upon this book. And this, because I have a lot of respect for the Economist's magazine, is extremely upsetting to me.
