The Secret: What Great Leaders Know and Do
Ken Blanchard, Mark Miller, John C Maxwell
This is a story about Debbie Brewster. She is the new head of corporate client services.
Debbie's current situation is her team scores are the lowest in the company and she has to figure out how to improve them.
Debbie begins by trying to assess her situation on her own but then realizes she needs help.
Debbie discovers the companies mentorship program and signs up for it.
She gets Jeff as her mentor. Jeff is the companies president. They spend several weeks together. Jeff gives Debbie his secrets to becoming a successful leader. He teaches Debbie the SERVE model. He asks Debbie several direction questions about her self and team. Debbie's homework assignment is to answer those questions and bring the answers with her at their next meeting.
Serve stands for:
1)See the future - where are you going with your team
2)Engage others and develop them - Assign the right people to the right jobs and help them to smooth out their rough edges.
3)Reinvent Continuously - Continue to learn
4)Value Results and Relationships - Get results from those in the right position by being relationships.
5)Embody Values - Walk the talk. Be a role model for what you believe in and your team will follow.
As Debbie learns, understands and implements Jeff's teaching she begins to see excellent results.
This book is a quick but powerful read. I highly recommend to new leaders.
