Agriculture in developing countries has been remarkably successful during the past few decades in enabling food production to keep pace with the growing population. This success has been achieved in part at the cost of placing more stress on natural resources and the environment. As we look to the future, the need to continue increasing food production, while at the same time minimizing environmental damages, conserving the resource base, and reducing poverty, hunge{, and malnutrition, poses an enormous challenge.
